The Crazy and Unusual Friday Post: The Humanzee

It's no secret that chimpanzee's and humans share similar attributes, but did you know that our DNA sequence and coding is so closely related that its speculation that a hybrid is possible?

Enter the Humanzee... although it's not widely discussed, there have been cases of alleged Humanzee's among us. Oliver, a famous chimpanzee, was believed to be a Humanzee, but that theory was disproved by scientists insisting he shared the same number of chromosomes as a common chimpanzee. Oliver, with his human-like face, walked upright, refusing to act as a normal chimp.

But, then there was Zana, the Wild Woman found in the mid 1800's in a province of Russia. She had "ape-like" features including being covered with hair. After she was captured, she was caged for a couple of years until she was "domesticated". She even had children later on.

So, is it possible to breed humans and chimpanzees? This would put a whole new spin on the old Tarzan tale.

You def had me clicking on the links Miranda. Yeah, I can see where Zana not wanting to wear clothes would be a problem.

Please don't give the crazy humans any ideas. . .

I don't know if humans and chimps will ever breed, but if our kids don't start reading soon, Planet of the Apes will no longer be science fiction.

There is a large colony of Humanzees living in south Leeds. They wear tracksuits, don't work, spend their benefit money on cigarettes and strong lager and sit on their arses watching daytime TV.

Not sure whether to be fascinated or a little freaked.

Although...it certainly gets the old imagination ticking, especially after seeing pictures of Oliver and Zana!

Interesting. When you compare chimpanzees to humans, visually anyway, we're pretty close. Kind of freaky:)

The thought is a little unsettling. It makes me think of that classic 60s movie, Planet of the Apes.

I once had a biology teacher who theorized dolphins, humans and apes came from the same original lineage...

I wonder what Zana's DNA revealed. I bet Lydia could write a post about this!

I love the new look of your blog.
