There are 'hearers' among us. Yes, according to research data collected in 1993, approximately 2% of Taos, New Mexico residents are 'hearers' of the Taos Hum.
What is the Taos Hum? Well, thanks for asking...it's what some residents of Taos, New Mexico have complained about for a very long time, and no one can concretely explain this phenomenon. The Hum is said to cause loss of sleep, dizziness, headaches, anxiety, nosebleeds, etc. etc. Some 'hearers' describe the sound as a hum, hence the name, or even a freight train; the sound differing to the 'hearers'.
Studies began to focus on the individuals who were considered the 'hearers' of the Hum once they realized not everyone could hear the phenomenon. The Hums occur in various locations around the world, not only in Taos, but in specific pockets, but no scientist can say exactly what is causing said disturbances. There are theories, but nothing proven substantial.
So, why does it only affect a small percent of the population? Why are some of us 'hearers' and others oblivious to the noise? Interesting to speculate. I'm really digging "The Hearers" as a story idea. Hmmmm.
Have a great weekend!

That would probably be annoying.

Ooh, so am I! Sounds like a great story starter to me!
Does sound like a great story idea, but would be very very annoying.
Maybe it's tinnitus. ^_^
"Hearers" Great title! You could really take that story idea far...
Oh wow, that's really interesting! I'd love to know why some people can hear it and some can't. And I agree, it's a great story idea!
I love your crazy and unusual posts. The hum is incredibly interesting.
I know that when it's very quiet, you can hear the Earth hum, but not to the point where's it's disturbing. It tends to put me to sleep.
I was just reading about this today. It's weird how it shows up in certain places, like Taos. Do these people have exceptional hearing or a bad case of tinnitus? We'll probably never know.
Write the story! I have been there a few times and never heard the hum. Now, you have sparked my interest. Write the story!
Thanks for sharing that, Miranda. That does sound like a story waiting to be told. So, are ya gonna tell it? ;)

So many story possibilities in there!
I talked with a coworker about this years ago. He was born and raised in NM. He said that the state has a very high suicide rate. I asked why. He said because of the hum.
He thought it was something to do with the wind.
This is so interesting in an unnerving sort of way. However, what a great starting point for unusual inspiration.
I love these posts of yours :)
wow this would make a great story!
It reminds me of Shannon Hale's The Princess Academy. Don't they 'hear' things too? It's been several years since I read it, and the focus isn't so much on the hearing as it is on the princess training. I think we could use more 'hearing' books. ;)
Hey, Jen. Been a while since I've stopped by. Your place looks great!
I've been to Taos--beautiful place! I had no problems sleeping, nor did I have a headache. But this does sound like a good subject to research for a story.
Out around here the "hum" is from the many windmills that they put up on windmill farms. That causes the same problems. I don't recall if they have windmills in Taos. I don't think so.
wow..an outlier group..
or something from that movie with Julia Roberts where she investigates high cancer rates clustered in a poor area..
THAT IS SO COOL. The speculative fiction writer in me is completely fascinated. Thanks for sharing!
