The Crazy and Unusual Friday Post: The Hopkinsville Goblins

Big floppy elephant sized ears, long arms that hang to the ground with talons at the end of them, big heads with eyes that glow in the dark...can only mean one thing...The Hopkinsville Goblins have come for you.

On August 21, 1955 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, a farming family and some of their friends experienced quite an evening. Lucky Sutton spotted the strange floating, colorful object in the sky and soon after small creatures came for them.

The Sutton's and friends fired shots at the "goblins", but the goblins would bounce around and disappear, only to return and taunt them further. The family eventually saw their chance to pack into their vehicles and head to the police station.

The police returned to the farm to investigate and found no little goblins hopping around, but after they left...you guessed it...the goblins returned to taunt the family.

So, were the goblins visitors from another planet or perhaps the family had the wrong kind of mushrooms flavoring their dinner that evening? Honestly, I like the reference to goblins. It made me laugh.

Lol, what a bizarre story. My guess is bad moonshine or purple mushrooms.

The fantastic part of my imagination would like to think the goblins were real. It wasn't just one person having this moment. It was the family and friends that were there.

But...the wrong kind of shrooms can make a group see and hear the most amazing and bizarre things. lol!!

Goblins? I guess aliens could look like goblins. Especially if they were drinking something funny.

I vote for psychedelic mushrooms. (Taken out of context, that's a weird quote that could get me in trouble.)

I read about these when I was a kid, why do aliens only ever visit rednecks?

I'm torn. The shrooms sound more realistic - but the goblins are way more fun to imagine!

That's wild. I never heard of that before. I could spend years wondering what the heck really happened.

Small world... I moved to a town near Hopkinsville, KY (Madisonville) the summer before my senior year in high school. There were some nasty goblins that tortured me as the new kid. Oh wait, they were just teenage girl who sensed fresh meat, what was I thinking?

Smiles.

I love your blog title!
That is an intriguing story. The images of bouncing goblins from outerspace is fun.

I did a post on this back in 2007. I read so many different theories. But the one common thread remains - Lucky and his buds were armed and weren't afraid to shoot!

Definitely mushrooms and maybe some moonshine. Maybe they were fireflies?

What an interesting story. I love the idea of flitting goblins from another world, too. What fun ... unless they're coming for you.

Haha! I think they were smoking something. That def has to be the reason for the goblin attack. :D
